Five Common Questions About Acupuncture (Answered)

If you've never tried acupuncture before, it's natural to have questions. Here are five we hear regularly at our South Croydon clinic.
1. Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are surprised by how little they feel. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine – about the width of a hair – and bear no resemblance to the needles used for injections or blood tests.
You might feel a tiny pinprick as the needle is inserted, followed by a subtle sensation of warmth, heaviness, or tingling. Many patients find the treatment so relaxing they doze off during their session.
2. How many treatments will I need?
This depends entirely on what we're treating and how long you've had the problem. Acute conditions (something that's just happened) often respond within 3-6 treatments. Chronic conditions that have been present for months or years typically need a longer course of treatment.
After your initial consultation, we'll discuss a realistic treatment plan. We review progress regularly and adjust the approach as needed.
3. Is acupuncture safe?
When carried out by a qualified practitioner, acupuncture is very safe. We use single-use, sterile needles that are disposed of immediately after treatment. Side effects are rare and usually mild – occasionally people feel a bit tired or lightheaded after their first session, but this passes quickly.
All our practitioners are registered with professional bodies and maintain full insurance and hygiene standards.
4. What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. We often need access to points on your lower legs, arms, and back, so clothing that can be easily rolled up is ideal. There's no need to undress unless we're incorporating massage into your treatment.
5. Will my GP mind if I have acupuncture?
Most GPs are supportive of acupuncture, particularly for pain management and conditions where conventional treatment has limited options. Some GP surgeries even offer acupuncture themselves.
We're always happy to communicate with your GP if needed, and we'd never suggest stopping prescribed medication without your doctor's involvement.
