Back Pain Treatment in South Croydon

Back pain affects most of us at some point, whether it's a sudden injury, long-term discomfort, or pain that comes and goes. At Centred Health in South Croydon, we use acupuncture and complementary therapies to help reduce pain and restore movement.

Understanding Your Back Pain

Back pain has many causes:

  • Muscular strain from lifting, poor posture, or repetitive movements

  • Disc problems or nerve irritation (such as sciatica)

  • Arthritic changes in the spine

  • Tension and stress held in the muscles

  • Pregnancy-related back pain

We take time to understand what's causing your pain and how it affects your daily life before recommending treatment.

How Acupuncture Helps

Acupuncture can be effective for both acute (recent) and chronic (long-term) back pain. Treatment works by:

  • Releasing muscle tension and spasm

  • Reducing inflammation around affected areas

  • Stimulating the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals

  • Improving blood flow to support healing

  • Calming the nervous system's pain response

Many patients notice improvement within 3-6 treatments, though this varies depending on how long you've had the pain and its underlying cause.

Complementary Treatments

Alongside acupuncture, we may recommend:

  • Massage therapy to release tight muscles and improve flexibility

  • Cupping to reduce muscle tension in the back and shoulders

  • Lifestyle guidance on posture, movement, and self-care between appointments

What Happens in Your Appointment

Your first visit includes a full assessment of your back pain – when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it limits your activities. We'll also ask about your general health, as this helps us treat you as a whole person rather than just focusing on symptoms.

Treatment is usually carried out lying down (face down, on your side, or on your back, depending on what's comfortable for you). Fine needles are inserted at specific points, then left in place for 20-30 minutes whilst you rest.

Most people find acupuncture relaxing. The needles are much finer than those used for injections, and most points involve minimal sensation.
